General Information

All Shows start at 10 am and finish at 4 pm unless otherwise stated. Entrance fees are as shown against each Show. Christmas Fair runs 9:30am-4pm. Coffee & Cars Meetings run 9am-1pm.

The miniature railway is OPEN for Steam train rides at many but not all of our main What's On days. If you are planning a train ride then please see the Running dates. An additional charge is made for the ride. We reserve the right to replace the miniature steam engine with a diesel engine as and when operational circumstances may demand. Children under one year old cannot be carried.

The 'Model Village' will be OPEN on the First Sunday in the month as well as dates shown below and on its web page found by clicking on the red text.

"Marshall" the Lilleshall triple-expansion steam pumping engine will only RUN at Shows where shown below.

For all What's On days the Steam Pump Tea Room will be OPEN serving food and refreshments.

2019 Exhibitor Application forms are available on line via the Exhibitors and Contact Us drop down menus above as on line forms or in printable pdf format. Stallholders forms are only available in pdf format.

Private Hire

Some indoor facilities are available for hire to groups and individuals. In addition the Museum has a quiet, level and secluded three-acre field which can be hired out to appropriate groups and organisations for example, weddings and private functions. For details of availability contact the Museum Manager via the contact page.

Snapping the Stiletto

Temporary Exhibition - Snapping the Stiletto

Exhibition as part of Essex County Council's 'Snapping the Stiletto' 2 year project. We will be sharing the stories of strong Essex Women with the aim of replacing the outdated stereotype of 'Essex Girls'. The exhibition will also celebrate Amy Johnson's (CBE) achievements.

An exhibition looking at Airships, Blimps & Zepplins - basically all things lighter than conventional air craft. Explore the history and learn about the airships that crashed here in Essex during the First World War.

An 'Informal Introduction' to the Life of Jane Austen

On Thursday, 15th August the brilliant DOT Productions will be performing Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility (as adapted by Dawn Bush).
To make the evening more special, the Museum is hosting an ‘Informal Introduction to Jane Austen’ talk and discussion.  This is an opportunity to find out  about the life and times of Jane Austen and the key themes of Sense and Sensibility.  Whether you are familiar with the book and would like to share your ideas or simply interested in someone who is considered one of our greatest authors, you will be very welcome.
Our guest speaker is Joan Binder, who holds a BA English degree, is a qualified teacher and  is the current Chair of the Plume Academy Trust.

DOT Theatre (Evening Performance)

Thursday 15th August 2019 - Performance Starts at 7:30pm, Doors open 5:30pm

'Sense and Sensibility' by Jane Austen presented by DOT Productions

The Dashwood sisters have a very different approach to their love lives. Elinor has much more Sense, but Marianne has a great deal of Sensibility.

Hero’s, heartbreak and debonair villains, all topped off with a dashing duel, will have you falling in love with this wonderful Austen novel and leave you wondering, are you an Elinor or a Marianne?

A cast of five actors and DOTS renowned comedic style make this comedy of manners a production not to be missed.

Essex Faery Fayre & Candlelight Illuminations

Saturday 28th September 2019

First ever Faery Fair at the Museum & Astaria Model Village with fairy themed stalls, crafts and competitions, storytelling, wand making workshops, a mystical labyrinth, hoola hoop sessions and crowing our chosen princesses, King and Queen. The day finishes with the first Magical evening of 2019 in our Model Village with over 400 candlelit lanterns illuminating the village and its Fairies and Elves.

Autumn Fun For Kids

Wednesday 30th October to Friday 1st November 2019

Bring your youngsters along to the Museum during the Autumn Half Term Holidays and join in the fun of our:

Bug Hunt – join Essex Wildlife to find the bugs and creepy crawlies in our grounds

Autumn Arts and Crafts – have fun painting, hiding and finding rocks around the Museum grounds, make a conker spider, leaf mask, kite and enjoy other craft activities.  Also come and make an autumn collage, win a great art set for the winner

Exciting engineering – can you build the strongest bridge or tallest newspaper tower? A construction set will be given to the one that reaches the highest heights

Astaria Model Village open on Thursday, 31st October.
